Original Animated Videos or OAV's are animated features produced for the home market, meaning they bypass any broadcasting on television or showing in theatres and are only available for retail sale or as a bonus for those who purchase a particular item. In some instances, the term can also be used to refer to a brief anime series with only a few episodes or to animated special produced for an anime series not part of the season lineup.
In total, three OAV's were produced for Cardcaptor Sakura, each with a running time of only five minutes. To fans of the series, these OAV's have become known as Video Diaries, which is short for their relatively long title. To obtain the Video Diaries, you needed to first purchase the first season on VHS, the second and third season on VHS as well as 9 Cardcaptor Sakura DVD's and after collecting tokens, you could then redeem the Video Diaries. More recently however, the Video Diaries are available to those who purchase the third Cardcaptor Sakura Box Set.
