The Middle
Nearly a year since that fateful day when 'The Clow' was opened and the Clow Cards were released into the world, Sakura has managed to recapture a majority of the cards and in the process has grown not only as a cardcaptor, developing and strengthening her magical ability, but also as a person, overcoming seemingly impossible tasks as well as meeting new people and forming new relationships.

A new school year is about to begin and Sakura, now eleven and in the fifth grade at Tomoeda Elementary School, only has a handful of Clow Cards left to capture, although the remaining cards are some of the most powerful and not to mention difficult. The new year begins with Sakura's class preparing to perform Sleeping Beauty at the school's Literary Fest. Sakura is cast as the role of the Prince while Syaoran is cast as the role of the Princess. During the play, as it is reaching its romantic climax, everything and everyone is cast into permanent darkness by the Dark Card. Unless Sakura can find the strength and light within herself to capture the card, everything and everyone will remain in permanent darkness. After searching, Sakura comes to the realisation that the light has always been within her and with this, she is able to capture two of the most powerful cards: The Light and The Dark.

Soon afterwards, Meiling is required to return to Hong Kong. Syaoran seems untroubled by this, much to the sadness and pain of Meiling. Sakura on the other hand is devasted by the thought of her leaving and invites Meiling to her house for a sleep over, where the two become closer as Meiling reveals the history behind her and Syaoran's relationship. Before leaving, Meiling assists Syaoran in capturing the Twin, a task that would not have been possible without her.

Finally, the last Clow Cards makes an appearance at a shrine in Tokyo, where Sakura, Syaoran and Tomoyo are watching Yukito and Ms. Mizuki compete in an archery contest. As the Earthy Card is about to attack, Ms. Mizuki reveals herself and her magical ability to Kero-chan as well as the knowledge she posses about the Clow Cards, Sakura's task and the event which is about to take place. Without to much difficulty, Sakura is able to capture the Earthy using the Wood. As she seals the card, Kero-chan regains his powers, meaning he is finally able to return to his true form - an impressive-looking, winged beast. However, he is not the only guardian to regain his powers. As Sakura signs her name on the card, Yukito transforms into Yue, the second guardian of the cards, much to the shock and disbelief of Sakura.

While Kero-chan was appointed to select a candidate to be the new master or mistress of the cards, it is Yue's job to conduct a final judgement in order to determine whether the candidate is worthy of being the new master or the mistress of the cards. As both Sakura and Syaoran captured the Clow Cards, there are two candidates to be the master or mistress, meaning the two must both undertake the final judgement. Syaoran is called first and must defeat Yue with all the cards in his possession in order to pass the final judgement and become the new master. However, after using a card under Yue's jurisdiction, the moon, Syaoran fails and is sent back. Next, Sakura must face the final judgement.

The final judgement is exactly like the reoccurring dream Sakura's been having since she first became Cardcaptor. Only this is not a dream, the final judgement is real. Sakura refuses to fight Yue as his borrowed form is Yukito, and she will not do anything to hurt him. However, Yue shows no mercy and Sakura is subjected to the full extent of his powers. Sakura knows she must do something, but nothing that may hurt Yue so she uses the Wood not knowing that the card is under Yue's jurisdiction. Yue is able to turn the Wood back onto Sakura and as she is being strangled by Wood's branches, the disaster that Kero-chan predicted would befall this world is about to take place...

... It is another ordinary day: Sakura wakes up late and rushes to get ready for school. On her way there, she feels as though she is supposed to meet somebody but there is nobody waiting. When she gets to school, nobody greets her. Everybody seems to be lifeless and cold. It is as if there is no love left in this world; everyone has forgotten the feelings they have for those they care about. After school, Touya is waiting to take Sakura home but he is also lifeless and cold. It is too much for Sakura and she runs away. Eventually, Sakura stops in front of an old, dilapidated house. Something about the house is drawing her towards it. She races around the back of the house and all of a sudden, Sakura is flooded with feelings for her loved ones. She is reminded of her family, her friends and Yukito...

... Sakura finds herself on the top of Tokyo Tower again facing a shocked Yue. As it turns out, she has been granted a second chance at the final judgement courtesy of Ms. Mizuki and her Clow Bell. Having experienced a world without love, Sakura explains to Yue that she does not want to he his mistress, but rather, she would like to be his and Kero-chah's friend. With that, Sakura passes the final judgement and becomes the new mistress of the Clow Cards.
